name of piece
"Butterfly", 1996
The piece consists of a three-part vanity mirror whose wooden structure has been gilded in the manner of a religious icon or altarpiece. Within the mirrors is a close up image of a pair of women's lips. The image is divided over the three sections of the mirror, the outer portions of the image break into symmetrical sores that are at once beautiful in their texture, colour and detail, and horrific in their implication of disease and their difilement of the central image and its initial appeal.
name of piece
"Stay", 1995
The piece consists of a free-standing room occupying the centre of another, larger space. Its exterior forms a reflection or inversion of the theoretical 'white cube', Inside are two objects made of moulded and stitched tanned leather, one lies on the floor, the other hangs on a coat hook on the back of the door, presented as if available for use. Centred around the body, these objects form part of an artistic anthropology whose telling artefacts reflect the needs, wishes, desires and aspirations of the absent other that they propose.
